In the course of history, there comes a time when humanity is called to shift to a new level of consciousness, to reach a higher moral ground. A time when we have to shed our fear and give hope to each other. That time is now. – Wangari Maathai
Wangari Maathai (1940 – 2011) – Kenyan-born environmental, political, and women’s rights activist. Wangari was the first woman in East Africa to earn a doctorate degree. In 1977 she launched The Green Belt Movement to reforest the country and aid women in need of income. The movement is responsible for over 30 million trees being planted and about 30,000 women gaining new skills and opportunities.
Wangari Matthai was the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy, and peace.
